Do we need a Product Facts label for Brands Made in China?
Food packaging requires a ‘Nutritional Facts’ label in the USA. Perhaps we now need a ‘Product Facts’ label to generate awareness of just how much damage a product does to our envirornment, our economy and any suffering that went into making it.
Customers often purchase cheap items, guilt free and without considering the cost of these low prices. Perhaps by highlighting these hidden costs when they purchase that $9 shirt shipped from Guangzhou it might persuede some shoppers to go with a $30 higher quality Polarmax shirt instead, made in the USA.
Nutirition Facts
‘Nutirition Facts’ has been a great tool for encouraging healty choices for our bodies. Perhaps now is the time do the same for the environment and society.
The most powerful thing you can do is vote with your wallet. This would also encourage companies to manufacture domestically or closer to home, avoiding unnecessary CO2 emissions, encouraging Child Labor or Human Rights violations as consumers become more aware of how their products are made.
‘Designed in California’
This would of course upset the many companies hiding their manufacturing origins with clever tactics such as ‘assembled in USA’ or ‘Designed in California’. But we should put the people and the environment above companies for once.
There is usually no downside to sharing information. Give people the information so they can make their own mind up how they spend their money.
There would of course be the slight cost of the labels themselves, but they could double up including the barcode. The CO2 saved from people making smarter choices would of course offset label costs.
